How XT File Shredder Lizard works

XT File Shredder Lizard offers the ability to remove all traces of selected files from your hard drive. It has the ability to perform a Department of Defense compliant wipe of file data. XT File Shredder Lizard is designed to remove file data permanently. File data does not include file name, or other file attribute information, only the data portion of a file that is stored on your computer. Although XT File Shredder Lizard can permanently remove the data portion of a file stored on a hard drive, it cannot permanently remove the file name or attribute information about that file.

XT File Shredder Lizard uses hexadecimal values to wipe files. After that the file is renamed and truncated to zero length.

The files that will be permanently removed are stored in a list. To add files to that list select the Add Files command from the File menu or Toolbar. File Dialog Box will be open to select one or more files. These files will be added to the list. To remove files from list, select them and activate Remove Selected Items from Edit menu. To empty file list, select menu command named Remove All Items.

When you chose which files to be permanently deleted select WIPE All Files. You can also select some of them and activate WIPE Selected files menu command. From now the data of these files can’t be returned.

You can wipe content of a folder. All files in a folder and his subfolders will be permanently deleted.

You can also wipe recycle bin contents.

To terminate deletion of the files, click the Cancel button in the Abort dialog box. This will stop deletion of the current file or folder, but this file may be corrupt and can’t be used any more.

Create shortcut on your desktop and drag files to it to add them to the list.

How to change wipe algorithm

XT File Shredder Lizard has three choices for wiping which are in File->Options menu.

  1. Simple Wipe writes the value 0 to replace the data being wiped. The fastest one.
  2. Government Wipe is a 3-pass procedure that conforms to the method specified in DoD (Department of Defense) document 5220-22-M, National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual, for the ultimate security level when eliminating viruses off your hard drive. More powerful DoD technique with 7 passes.
  3. XT File Shredder Lizard most powerful technique with 30 passes. Very powerful and very very slow.

In Windows Me and Windows XP, the Windows System Restore function can restore files that have been wiped if they are one of the protected file types. By default, many document types, such as .DOC and .XLS files in My Documents are protected. Windows System Restore maintains a copy of protected files. Wiping the original file does not wipe the copy that System Restore maintains
